Caribbean stud poker is an up and coming variation of the popular poker standard five card stud. The primary difference between Caribbean stud poker and five card stud is the playing style and the progressive jackpot. By playing style, I am referring to the fact that each individual player at a Caribbean stud table is playing their hand against the dealer’s hand and the dealer’s hand only. 

The progressive jackpot feature offered in Caribbean stud is unique to this live poker variation, as these progressives are more commonly seen at banks of electric poker machines. Players become eligible for the progressive when they place a chip in the jackpot slot.

Any combination of a flush or higher pays out, with royal and straight flushes being the favored combinations for paying out the total progressive jackpots. Simply getting the combination wins the jackpot, even if the player does not win their hand with that combination.

Rules of Caribbean Stud Poker

Most of the rules of Caribbean stud poker are the same as five card stud. After each player has anted in, the dealer will deal each player five cards, then will deal themselves five cards, turning the first one face up. The players may lift and view their cards once, and then are required to place them back on the table and are not allowed to touch them again. They then place a bet (twice the size of their ante) or fold. The dealer reveals their cards and challenges each player’s hand in turn. 

The primary difference in Caribbean stud is that none of the player cards are shown, no table talk is allowed, and no player may hold more than one hand per round. All of these rules are safeguards against potential card counting or collusion.

If the dealer’s hand does not have at least a King, an Ace, or some higher combination then player antes are returned and the raises are pushed. If the dealer has a suitable combination and wins, then all players with lower hands lose both antes and bets. If, however, a player beats the dealer when the dealer has a qualified hand then the ante is returned and the bet receives the appropriate payoff.

Players alone are responsible for placing their progressive bets. This is to be done after the ante but before the deal, and all jackpot players should confirm that their indicator light is on and their bet has been registered.

Caribbean Stud Poker Betting

Caribbean stud poker betting is quite simple. As with most poker tables, there is a minimum and a maximum. Players may ante within these restrictions. Their raise after the deal must be exactly twice their ante. In the event of a tie, misdeal, or even a win, the ante is only paid back in the original sum, and the bet is either pushed or paid off as applies.

The progressive jackpot buy in is predetermined and must be paid before every deal for the player to remain eligible.

Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy

Caribbean stud poker strategy is probably the most straight-forward of all poker strategies because the playing format of player vs. dealer allows for no bluffing, no calling or raising, and no card counting. Dealers are not known to give tells, which means the only indication a player has of their hand is the one card that is displayed face up.

Unfortunately, Caribbean stud poker offers the house one of its most lucrative advantages with an edge of over 5%. Playing the simplest strategy, this edge can be reduced by only a fraction of a percent. Obviously the best way to better understand your odds and to decrease the house advantage would be to know more of the cards, but any form of communication or collusion with other players is strictly against the rules. In fact, if a single card other than the designated dealer card is overturned, the entire hand is voided.

The most basic and frequent advice given to new players of Caribbean stud poker is to only bet of combinations of a pair or higher. More advanced players have more advanced strategies which incorporate a certain combination of face cards and the possession of at least one card higher than the dealer’s visible card.

Caribbean stud is a difficult poker variation to master, but many players find it an exciting change from the old tried and true five card stud.
