How to Play Roulette

Roulette is a fairly easy and well loved game in casinos and even online. It is fast paced and exciting and whether you will be betting big or just trying your hand at Roulette, you're sure to enjoy the experience. Here are some basic rules for how to play Roulette, as well as the betting procedures and the odds.

How to Play

When playing Roulette, your goal is to choose the number that the ball will land on after the wheel is done spinning. This is the winning number. Sure, it seems easy but Roulette is a game of chance and luck and one spin can either make you a winner or a loser. There are either 37 or 38 slots that the ball can fall into, which will determine the winning number.

If you're playing on a European Roulette table, you will have 37 slots and the house advantage is 2.7%. However, if you're playing on an American Roulette table, there will be 38 slots (including the 00 slot) and the house advantage is 5.26%. So, if you can play on a European table, you will have a better chance of winning.

Before playing, you obviously set your budget by purchasing Roulette chips from the dealer. You will then place your bet of at least the table's minimum before each spin and before the dealer announces that he is taking no more bets. Bets

In Roulette, you will either place inside bets or outside bets. Here is a basic rundown of what that means. For inside bets, you will be placing bets on individual numbers from 1 to 36 and the 0 and or 00. Of course, you can bet on a combination of numbers or a single number. Make sure you bet the minimum bet, for instance, if you're playing at a ten dollar table with one dollar chips, you can use 10 chips with any different combination of numbers.

Inside Bets

For one number, you will put the chip on that number. For two numbers, you want to put the chip on the line between two numbers and for three numbers, a chip is placed on the outside line of a row of three numbers. You can also place your chip on the 0-1-2, the 0-2-00 or the 2-3-00. To place your bid on four numbers, put the chip on the corner which connects those four numbers.

To place your bid on five numbers, you will put your chip on the basket, or the only five number bet which is the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Finally, in order to bet on six numbers, you want to put the chip on the line which connects two rows of three numbers.

Outside Bets

For all outside bets, you have to place at least the table minimum. To bet on dozens, you will put the chip on one of the boxes marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12. Of course, the winning number has to be within your 12 numbers. Also, if the ball lands on 0 or 00, you lose. For columns, you want to place the chip at the very bottom of one of the long columns of numbers.

Again, 0 and 00 are losing number and to win, the ball must land on one of the numbers inside your column. To choose red or black, you put the chip on the box marked red or black. 0 and 00 are losing numbers. To bet odd or even, you want to put your chip on one of the boxes marked odd or even. Of course, in order for you to win if you bet odd, the ball must land on an odd number. Same with even and 0 and 00 are again losing numbers.

Odds

Here is a quick rundown of the various payouts with each bet. To win on one number, your odds are 35 to 1. To win on two numbers, your odds are 17 to 1. To win on three numbers, your odds are 11 to 1. For four numbers, the odds are 8 to 1. For five numbers, the odds are 6 to 1 and six numbers makes the odds 5 to 1. Dozens and Columns are both 2 to 1 odds and red or black, odd or even and each of the 1-18 and 19-36 bets is 1 to 1.
