Roulette

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games because players can win large amounts of money while only risking a small wager. The top bets in roulette pay out 35:1, so by hitting on a $5 chip wager, you can win $175. However, with these high payouts come highly unfavorable odds, as the chances of you making that 35:1 payout is 38:1 against you, so the house still holds an advantage over players. However, many players like to play online Roulette; so let’s get into the discussion of Roulette.

How to Play

Roulette is a popular game because it is such a simple game to understand. You place your bets on a table with numbers on it, and if the small ball falls onto your number on the wheel, you win! Now of course that is a slight exaggeration of the simplicity, but it is a very easy game to understand, and we can cover all of the rules right here on this page.

The main components of the game are a wheel, a small ball, and a table with a “chart” on it where players place their bets. Before the wheel is spun, you place your bets on the table, either as inside bets or outside bets.

Inside Bets

Inside bets are wagers you place directly on numbers on the board. For example, you could place a $10 chip on the number 10, and if 10 hits you’ll be paid out 35:1 on your bet. Or, you can also make inside bets that cover multiple numbers. So, if you place a bet on the corner of 17, 18, 20, and 21, you’ll win if the ball falls on any of those numbers.

However, when you spread your bets out like that, you lose the high payouts. For example, by placing your wager across 4 numbers like in the above example, you’ll only be paid out 8:1 on a winning hit. Your odds of hitting one of those four numbers are 9.5:1, so your overall odds on the corner bet are actually worse then your Roulette odds on a normal inside bet, where you only place your chip on one number.

Outside Bets

Outside bets hit way more often, but have way less of a payout than inside bets. One outside bet you can make is a group bet, where your bet covers 1/3 of the 1-36 numbers, and pays out 2:1. Your odds of winning this bet are 2.16:1, so you’re taking an expected loss of 5.3 cents/dollar bet.

The 5.3 cent loss/dollar is common, as every bet in roulette has the same expected value except the 5 number bet, which takes a slightly heavier loss.

The house does hold a considerable advantage in roulette, but when you do win on an inside bet the payoff will be massive. 35:1 payout is one of the highest in any casino game, even though you’re only 38:1 to hit. For a nice article on roulette, read our roulette tips.
